The best BMX bike is the one you have. It’s that simple. It certainly doesn't need the best, most expensive bike to enjoy BMX. One of the biggest hurdles for people getting a start in BMX is the cost of the gear. Buying a BMX can be a daunting task and while we’ll go through that process in another post, we want to remind you of the real joys of BMX.
BMX, which if you didn’t know already, stands for Bicycle MotoCross. The whole thing with BMX, in the briefest of history lessons, is that it started with kids making their own bikes from scrap heaps and getting them to look like motorbikes. BMX was never about having the best BMX bike parts. It was about the pieced together monsters, personal style and riding your creation. BMX is riding with friends, getting a little bit of air-time and doing big skids in the dirt.
It has progressed since then, though. The empty paddocks are now filled with state of the art concrete skateparks. Big warehouses now play host to some of the biggest BMX competitions this country has ever seen and kids, young & old, now travel far and wide to ride their BMX bikes. But has that changed how, or what we ride? Not really.
The team at Rampfest have been riding bikes for a long time. While we always check out each other’s ride, it’s the friendships formed, tricks learned and laughter shared that keeps us engaged. Through working on bikes & then learning new tricks together, friendships are formed like no other.
When you head to the Rampfest Indoor Skatepark, you’ll quite often see some of the older, pro riders pushing the limits of what’s possible on a bike. If you look closely, their bikes are almost always some of the most simple bikes in the skatepark. While they may not be riding junkyard frankensteins, a lot of the pro BMX riders are more focussed on their riding than what is under them at the time. And the other thing you’ll notice is, they’re almost spending more time talking & laughing with each other as they are riding BMX.
You don’t need the top of the line, precision built machine to have a laugh with your friends, right?!
